Samantha (Sam) Roberts - Story Card

I’m Sam and I’ll be 15 next month, on April Fools’ Day. “Always been something a little funny about you,” my dad says every year. I don’t think he really means anything bad by it…

I guess I had my first crush on a girl when I was seven. But I had no idea that’s what it was. I just felt this kind of squishy happiness whenever Katie was around.

When I turned 10 things began to totally suck. The girls talked about the boys all the time and I had to pretend I cared I Jed was cuter that Brad or if Mike’s lips looked “kissable.”

Then, six months ago, magic!!! I met Roxanna at the bus stop. We sat at the back of the bus for five hours that day, just talking and talking and talking! A few nights later she took me to a party with the most amazing girls and women, and all of them were lesbians!

I felt like I could finally breathe.

Roxanna Stone's Story

I love Sam’s innocence, the way every lesbian is a minor miracle to her. Of course, I’m the major miracle for her. And, yeah, that feels good. Thanks to me, she sure had a hell of an easier time finding a community than I did. I’ve been on my own for three years, since I was 14. I’ll be 18 next month.

I work three jobs, but it’s not like “poor me”—I just like to keep busy. And there’s no one else to look out for me. I’m a barista, I work in the feminist bookstore, and I lifeguard. I live with Linda and Danielle. Even though they’re older, they’re pretty chill.

Sam’s fishy and adorable, but she’s got zero street smarts. She’s lucky she’s got me to take her under my wing and show her the ropes.
