Sexual Assault Statistics

Every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted.  And every 8 minutes, that victim is a child.

7 out of 10 rapes are committed by someone know to the victim.  25% by a current or former intimate partner, 45% by an acquaintance.

On average, there are 321,500 victims of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States (age 12 or older).  1 out of every 10 rape victims are male.

Perpetrators of sexual violence are less likely to  go to jail or prison than other criminals.  Only 310 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police.

In 11% of rape and sexual assault incidents, the perpetrator used a weapon (gun, knife, or other).  Personal weapons (hands, feet, teeth) are used against victims of sexual violence in about 2 out of 3 cases.
